In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought I would share something somewhat personal… My “happy place” that I go to when I need a mental break from what I’m experiencing - to bring me back to an even state. My therapist suggested this to me, and mentioned to include what senses are being stimulated for further submersion. So here it is. This is the note I keep on my phone, including the photos…
The Perfect Day
My happy place is my aunt’s backyard. She has a covered gazebo overlooking the garden. I imagine myself sitting on the cushioned chair, cup of tea in my hands, looking at the beautiful flowers she has growing there. The temperature is cool, but not too cold. The sun is shining and I can hear the birds at the feeder. There might even be a squirrel. Bonnie the cat is laying in the sun, but intently watching the birds. The mug of tea is warm in my hands and emits a comforting aroma. It tastes like being home - slightly sweet and slightly bitter. I can feel the cool, slightly moist wood beneath my bare feet. When my aunt joins me, we share memories of my mum. Her accent reminds me that I am indeed home.
